My Story

An introduction to me

Global news brands, international and regional media companies and family run businesses trust me to help support their staff and communities to stay safe, build resilience through sharing stories.

And I write my own.

How my story started

After a degree in English from Oxford University, I began my career at Reuters. I joined the news agency on their prestigious graduate trainee scheme for journalists. Based in London and Paris, I drew on my language skills, developing the ability to distil information clearly and accurately, across different subjects.

Chapter Two

The next chapter....

For more than a decade, I was a journalist for some of the world's most well-known media,  including The Times, the BBC, Channel 4 News. I worked in  multiple countries, across TV, radio, online and print, covering stories ranging from civil unrest to sport, entertainment to economics, politics to popular culture.

How my story unfolded

Journalism took me to frontlines and fault-lines, introducing me to individuals whose extraordinary stories I was privileged to share.

It also exposed me to experiences which changed my path, teaching me lessons of resilience, safety and wellbeing that shaped who I am.

Now I share these lessons and stories with others.

I led INSI through some of the biggest and most challenging stories of the decade, working with our members to keep their colleagues safe and informed. I rebranded INSI and oversaw its transition to become pioneer in the field and credited with putting safety for journalists and media workers, including local freelancers, firmly on the agenda at major news organisations around the world, including CNN, the BBC, ITN, Sky, The Associated Press, and Reuters.

AS the CEO of the Ethical Journalism Network, I was at the forefront of conversations around journalism and media ethics. As well as developing and delivering resources for journalists to cover migration, suicide, gendered violence and hate speech ethically, I also supported colleagues  working in countries under threat of imprisonment and facing threats to their freedom and wellbeing.

Together with my co-director, John Crowley, I built practical resources in partnership with the charity Mind, delivering workshops as well. We launched a podcast, 'Behind the Headlines' where we spoke with leading journalists for podcast about stories that impacted them and how they supported their mental health.

From frontlines to fault-lines: stories for wellbeing

🔸 Why me?

I want everyone to feel safe in the workplace.
I have seen and been to the edge. I connect with people through storytelling, having trained as a journalist, and I use my empathy and experiences to help them feel more heard and less alone. By sharing my expertise, I encourage them to identify what they need to help themselves and those around them thrive.

🔸Why you?

I want to help your leaders and companies walk the walk on psychological safety, mental health and wellbeing so you can enable your people and your workplaces to thrive.

🔸How I work

I have spent 15 years working with organisations around the world to help them understand and mitigate risks, prepare themselves to face change and crisis, communicate with compassion and clarity, and create safe spaces where people can do well and be well.

My experience of and recovery from trauma has taught me how to deal with and navigate crisis and uncertainty, afforded me the ability, awareness and acceptance to share my story, and connect with people with compassion.

🔸Why this matters

I am passionate about my work and driven by a mission that everyone should feel safe in the workplace. I have learned to walk the line that allows my purpose to be protective but not drive me to burnout, and it’s been a privilege to share these lessons around boundaries with others.

I have worked with hundreds of people in dozens of countries and am an expert at navigating the nuances of cross-cultural companies and organisations. I have a unique overview of the ways in which international organisations manage change, having specialised in supporting news and media companies who are often on the frontlines of transformation.

I also know how much more complex and challenging our world is becoming on a personal and professional level and how diverse generations of people are experiencing different pressures. My work with managers has helped many understand the multiple demands they face, prioritise their own wellbeing, as well as supporting those around them to achieve their potential. My work with younger cohorts of workers has helped them feel heard and find rest, respite and resilience in a world that often feels to be in a state of permanent crisis.

🔸What I do

I have carried out pioneering research into moral injury, showing the impact on individuals when they feel let down by their leaders, and have authored a ground-breaking book on mental health and wellbeing in journalism. I am a sought-after and talented facilitator and keynote speaker, event host and trainer.

I offer facilitated conversations, workshops, talks, resilience mentoring, manager training, and communication skills.

I look forward to helping you help yours.
